Wine in the Shawnee
Illinois is a big state. Oh, not like Texas or Alaska big. But, mention Illinois and everyone immediately thinks of Chicago. While 300 miles away lies a different world, the Shawnee National Forest. Along its northern edge, near the city of Carbondale, is Giant City State Park. Surrounding the park are the dozen wineries composing the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, and almost 20 different bed and breakfasts. The B and BGÇÖs are diverse, with personalities to match. From an antebellum mansion to an eco-retreat to fully equipped with widescreen plasma televisions and wi-fi. But I prefer the old cabins on the bluff at the park. Sure they have a cheesy electric fireplace in the living room. But, they also have large decks in the back overlooking the forest.
In the fall, it is easy to spend the day visiting the wineries, and trying a sample or two. While traveling in between, watching the leaves turning on the maple, ash, and oak. Picking a choice bottle, and cheese pla ... more
